Congratulations to the First Ever Virtual Practice Fellows: The Real Game Changers
Congratulations to the Social Work Practice Fellows of 2021! Many of the supervisors who have become Fellows this year have done so in their busy, sometimes even chaotic, homes and offices. Attending a total of eighteen two-hour virtual workshops in the midst of local and global disorder deserves acknowledgement. To the Fellows graduating in 2021, it is easy to say you are a group that harbors stability and honors the spirit of progress. Thank you for remaining committed to best practices during such a difficult time that calls deeply for them.
SWPF partner schools, Adelphi University, Syracuse University and the University of Connecticut, did an incredible job adapting to safety considerations that had to be taken in the age of COVID-19. We thank you, continuing education departments and instructors for your heartfelt collaboration and engagement with the program.
The unprecedented and unanticipated COVID-19 pandemic led to a transformation of the delivery of the Social Work Practice Fellows program in 2020 and 2021. In previous years, face-to-face gatherings were the cornerstone of the program’s educational model, and that key aspect could no longer characterize us as we entered this truly virtual age. Yet, with brand new challenges being presented to the social work profession and those we serve due to major societal changes during this time, assisting supervisors in expanding their skillsets and growing their capacity to adapt to such significant changes is something our team considered essential. In response to the safety needs of all, the Social Work Practice Fellows team designed an alternate model of the program that was distance-based and virtually delivered that still offered the level of communication and opportunities for engagement that SWPF strives for.

Trauma-Informed Supervision Forum: Supporting Staff during the COVID-19 Pandemic
June 6th at 10:30 am
For Practice Fellows Alumni Only!
We are offering a free, online forum just for you on the topic of “Trauma-Informed Supervision: Supporting Staff during the COVID-19 Pandemic.” Please join us!
Social work supervisors are facing unexpected changes, traumas, and social injustices during the COVID-19 pandemic in our organizations, professional roles, and personal lives. The gathering of supervisors in a virtual setting where we can relate during this painful time will give us room to tackle novel organizational issues, respond to staff challenges, observe self-care, exercise compassion, share resources, nurture relationships, design relevant strategies and generate applicable solutions.
To serve and support supervisors through this unique time in history, the Social Work Practice Fellows team invites you to come and connect with leaders in the field of supervision in a free, one-hour, trauma-informed supervision forum on Saturday, June 6, 2020, from 10:30-11:30 A.M.
In the forum, Natalie Brooks-Wilson, LCSW, Director of Mental Health Services at Safe Space NYC Inc., PhD Candidate at Adelphi University’s School of Social Work, and SWPF Fellows Network Liaison, will interview Dr. Laura Quiros, Associate Professor at Adelphi University’s School of Social Work, about trauma-informed supervision as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic. Brooks-Wilson, LCSW has served as a leader, trainer and program developer in the fields of foster care, mental health, Head Start, Early Head Start, and Child Protective Family Support Services. Dr. Quiros has contributed substantially to the trauma-informed perspective that blankets social work today, publishing numerous academic articles and book chapters, presenting at prominent research conferences and lecturing by invitation about this practice and its significance.
Drs. Barbara Silverstone and Daniel Kaplan, the directors of the Social Work Practice Fellows program, will greet the attendees at the start of the meeting. Additionally, participating supervisors will be invited to pose questions in the forum, as communication between these experts and social work supervisors might raise new questions and help disentangle current social work supervision challenges. Information about Continuing Education credit and learning objectives are found below.
If you are interested in attending this event, please register HERE.
While the forum is cost-free, we are accepting donations in order to support the Continuing Education Office at Adelphi University for volunteering their time and effort in awarding CE credits for participants. Any amount is greatly appreciated. You can make a donation HERE.
